Throwing garbage responsibly in Taiwan is easy! Here’s a simple guideline to navigating the system.

1.Understand the system:

  • Waste separation:
Taiwan emphasizes waste separation. Look for designated bins labeled for recyclables, food waste, general waste, and bulky items. Unsure about an item? Check with your building management or real estate agent.
  • Bagging:
Use designated bags for each type of waste. Recyclables and food waste typically require transparent bags, while general waste may require special designated bags.
Garbage collection comes everyday of the week except for Wednesdays and Sundays.

2.Dispose of different types of waste:

  • Recyclables:
Paper, plastic bottles and containers, metal cans, glass bottles and jars, and cardboard all go in the recycling bin. Rinse items and flatten cardboard beforehand.
  • Food waste:
Leftover food, fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, and other organic waste go in the food waste bin. Avoid mixing food waste with general trash.
  • General waste:
Anything not suitable for recycling or food waste, like tissues, plastic wrappers, diapers, and broken ceramics, goes in the general waste bin.
  • Bulky items:
Furniture, appliances, and large electronics require special disposal. You may contact the government toll free line (dial 1999) and they will set up a time to pick up the item free of charge!

3.How to dispose garbage?

A: Garbage trucks (Buildings without elevator - 公寓)

The garbage trucks move through Taipei on certain routes and schedules everyday of the week except for Wednesdays and Sundays. They will play a “Für Elise”” melody and make a brief stop at each location for residents to bring their trash down. Please keep in mind that garbage must be placed in government blue bags (can be bought from convenience stores or supermarkets) In Taipei City, these designated bags are blue, while in New Taipei City, they are pink.

B: In Building (Elevator Buildings (電梯大樓):

Garbage is usually regulated in the building and often stored in a garbage area monitored by the building. Residents can take the trash down anytime and any day of the week.

C: Independent Houses (別墅):

In general, most of these houses do not have a concierge – hence, residents will need to wait for the garbage trucks and use official garbage bags. However, if your schedule does not permit, some residents choose may choose to hire someone to come pick up their garbage for a reasonable cost.
