Disposing Kitchen Waste in Taiwan FAQ

In Taiwan, kitchen waste disposal follows strict waste management and recycling regulations. Here’s how you can properly dispose of kitchen waste:
1. Separate Your Kitchen Waste
Taiwan categorizes kitchen waste into two main types:
- Edible food waste (可餵食廚餘): Suitable for feeding pigs (e.g., vegetable scraps, rice, bread, and non-greasy leftovers).
- Non-edible food waste (不可餵食廚餘): Used for composting (e.g., fruit peels, coffee grounds, tea leaves, eggshells).
2. Use Official Waste Bags
- In most cities, you need to collect food waste in a container and bring it to designated collection trucks.
- Some areas allow using biodegradable bags, but plastic bags are usually not accepted.
3. Wait for the Garbage Truck
- Taiwan has specific collection times for food waste. It is usually collected separately from general trash and recyclables.
- The food waste truck (often with a green bin) follows the garbage truck schedule.
- Some areas allow you to drop food waste at designated community collection points.
5. Apartment or Building Rules
- Some apartment complexes have centralized food waste collection bins.
- Check with the property management for specific disposal guidelines.
